Recently there has been an increase in users reporting an issue with their web browsers (Safari, Chrome, or Firefox), where a pop-up alert window appears asking them that their computer may have been hijacked, compromised, virus attack or there is a "major security issue". The window may have a toll free phone number to call as seen below:
What you should do if you see these alert window pop-ups?
It's important to understand that this is not a computer virus, and your PC or Mac has not been infected with any malware, trojan or hijacking. Please DO NOT call the phone number listed in this window and don't panic at all.
This is a scam, and you should not spend any money or share your personal information with anyone to get rid of these messages. If you do happen to call one of these phone numbers, you will more than likely be asked to install special software on your PC or Mac that will allow them to remotely access information on your computer and possibly compromise your system further.
- You should immediately close down all your browser windows.
- Never ever click on any links or attachments which you do not recognize.
- Always keep your anti virus software updated.
Be assured that no one can hijack your computer unless you download unsolicited software from internet or allow someone to remotely access your computer. We have found that Heimdal PRO is not just an antivirus, but a very important additional layer of security. While antiviruses look for files and actions, Heimdal PRO looks at HTTP, HTTPS and DNS internet traffic. Because it works proactively, Heimdal PRO is a great security addition for antivirus (which works reactively).
